In 2017, Vision Australia’s audio description program will again help people from the blind and low vision community enjoy a range of plays, operas, musical and other performances across Australia.
If you have never booked a ticket to an audio described show before, what are you waiting for?
Here are our top nine tips to help you book your ticket to a show Vision Australia is audio describing this year:
- Ask for the ‘audio described service’ when booking your tickets.
- Each person in your group who is blind or has low vision will need their own audio description headset – so remember to book enough for one per person!
- An audio described ticket will not cost you any more than a regular ticket.
- Use your Companion Card! This will get you two tickets for the price of one to allow someone to accompany you for free. Contact Vision Australia if you need more information about registering for a Companion Card.
- You may need to provide your Companion Card number when booking, so have it ready in advance in your preferred format so you can read it out.
- For some audio described performances, a pre-show ‘tactile tour’ will be available to give you a hands on look at the props, set and costumes used in the performance prior to the show starting. This will give you an even better idea of what is happening on stage. You can check if a tactile tour is scheduled and how to reserve a spot when booking your tickets.
- Call the booking agent directly to book your tickets, not Vision Australia. We do not sell tickets to the shows ourselves.
- We recommend calling the booking agent to book your tickets rather than buying tickets online as the big ticket sellers do not always have an audio description service or Companion Card request built into their systems.
- Only some sessions of shows will be audio described. To find out which performances are being audio described near you, check out our events page www.visionaustralia.org/events or call Vision Australia on 1300 84 74 66.
