The Vision Australia Library has the privilege of working with award-winning poet, author, singer and advocate for the blind, Dave Steele.

Dave was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic eye condition, in 2014. Since his diagnosis, Dave has tirelessly advocated for the rights of blind and low vision people across the world. His collaborative work with global brands has advanced the global conversation on blindness and disability.

The Vision Australia Library In Conversation with Dave Steele

Dave is the author of 'Stand By Me RP', a collection of three poetry anthologies which are international best sellers. Dave’s success as a poet was not a lifetime ambition; poetry was a therapeutic outlet for Dave after being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa.

His heartfelt poetry has become a voice for all affected by blindness and low vision. His poetry is a testament to the transformative power of art. Vision Australia’s In Conversation with Dave Steele is available on the i-Access catalogue.

Poetry workshop with Dave Steele

Dave is facilitating a five-week poetry program for the Vision Australia Library, commencing July 1, 2026. Over the course of five weeks, we will explore themes of sight loss, resilience and creativity. The program will maintain a focus on writing for wellbeing, using poetry as a tool to express feelings, process experiences and build confidence.

The poetry workshop will be featured on the What’s On section of our website. Registrations open in June.
